Starting January 1st, 2026, foreign nationals entering Georgia under a visa-free regime or on a tourist visa will have to hold mandatory health and accident insurance. The requirement is introduced by Ordinance No. 602, which has already been adopted.

Who Is Required to Hold the Insurance and What Must It Cover?

The obligation applies to all foreign nationals entering Georgia under a visa-free regime or on a tourist visa.

However, there are exceptions. Specifically, the following categories are exempt from this requirement:

  • Holders of Georgian legal residence permits.
  • Representatives of diplomatic missions, embassies, and consular offices, as well as their family members.
  • Drivers engaged in international road freight and passenger transportation.

The insurance must cover healthcare expenses and accidents.

Minimum Requirements for the Mandatory Health and Accident Insurance

The insurance must meet the following minimum criteria:

  • You can purchase the insurance from a Georgian or foreign insurance company, provided that the insurer has the proper authorization to offer insurance services under their applicable legislation.
  • Tourists entering Georgia may present their insurance in either material or electronic form, in Georgian or English.
  • Coverage must extend to the entire period of stay in Georgia, for a maximum duration of up to one year.
  • The minimum coverage amount must be 30,000 GEL.
